John J. Cush, MD, is a Professor of Internal Medicine at the TCU Burnett School of Medicine in Fort Worth, Texas.  He is also the executive editor of RheumNow.com – a news, information and education network dedicated to rheumatology.

Dr. Cush received his medical degree from St. George’s University School of Medicine in Grenada. He completed his Internal Medicine residency at the Coney Island Hospital in NYC and his Rheumatology training at The University of Texas Health Science Center and Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas.

He has a career long academic rheumatologist, rising to the level of professor with appoint-ments at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School, Baylor University Medical Center, Texas A&M College of Medicine, and St. Georges University School of Medicine. He is.

Dr. Cush’s career has focused on translational immunology, novel drug development, medical education, and drug safety. He has published over 150 journal articles and written numerous Rheumatology textbook chapters (including, “The Approach to Articular and Musculoskeletal Disorders”, in Harrison’s Principles of Internal Medicine (12th through 21st editions).  Dr. Cush has co-authored three textbooks Rheumatology: Diagnosis and Therapeutics (2nd edition, 2005), Rheumatoid Arthritis: Diagnosis and Treatment (4th edition, 2014) and the on-line textbook RheumaKnowledgy.com (2015).

Dr. Cush has a distinguished career in clinical trials and drug development. In addition to his service on the Food and Drug Administrations (FDA) Arthritis Advisory Committee (2002-2006), he continues this role ad libitum as a SGE (special government employee 2006-2023) for future advisory panels. He has served on the research committees or IRB at UT Southwestern Medical School, Presbyterian Hospital of Dallas and Baylor University Medical Center and had headed up several Data Safety Monitoring Boards for major biologics developed for use in Rheumatoid Arthritis. He has been an investigator or coinvestigator in over 120 sponsored clinical trials (including 3 phase 1 trials), primary investigator in two sponsored trials, primary investigator in seven self/institutional sponsored clinical trials and has been the PI or co-investigator of four clinical trials funded under the NIH – Academic Centers of Excellence (ACE) Grants between 2009-2013.

In addition to his clinical research, his devoted interests in research and education include rheumatoid arthritis, spondyloarthritis, Still’s disease, drug safety, biologic and novel therapies, pregnancy and spondyloarthritis.

He has held numerous leadership positions for the American College of Rheumatology and National Arthritis Foundation and editorial positions for the Journal of Rheumatology, Seminars in Arthritis & Rheumatism and was the creator and editor of the ACR’s Hotline and Drug Safety Quarterly.

Dr. Cush has been a pioneer in digital online education and founded a rheumatology focused website, RheumNow.com, dedicated to rheumatology. He is also the editor for the free, online textbook, RheumaKnowledgy.com.
